“I figured I’d start at the bottom, like all sportswriters, covering high schools or colleges. Imagine my shock when Bob came by my desk and told me that management had approved my transfer to sports and that I would be replacing Peters as the Giants writer. I was flabbergasted. So was the rest of the staff. Other sportswriters were angry — I couldn’t blame them — because this was a plum assignment and some were passed over. One higher editor called it a “poor decision.””
